How to compress a PDF step by step

  2. Choose a level: lossless, balanced, or high, depending on the quality you need to preserve.
  3. Start compression and wait until the document has been processed.
  4. Compare file sizes. If the result is smaller, you can download the optimized PDF.

Which PDF compression level should you choose?

Lossless

Optimizes the file structure without turning pages into images. Choose it to preserve selectable text and sharpness, although savings may be small or nonexistent.

Balanced

Turns pages into compressed images, balancing readability and size. It may shrink PDFs with photos or scans, but text will no longer be selectable.

High

Applies stronger visual compression to try to create smaller files. Fine print, graphics, and photos may lose sharpness.

Why won't my PDF get any smaller?

An already optimized PDF, mostly text-based document, or file with compressed images may not shrink. Rebuilding its pages can even increase its size. The tool tells you and keeps the original; this does not mean compression failed.

When is reducing PDF file size useful?

  • Email documents when attachment size limits apply.
  • Share notes, manuals, or presentations on platforms with file size restrictions.
  • Save storage space when archiving scanned document copies, provided the final quality is sufficient.

Privacy, compatibility, and limits

PDFs are processed locally in your browser without uploading the document to a server for compression. The input limit is 75 MB; balanced and high modes support up to 80 pages. Damaged or password-protected files may not open.

Important: balanced and high modes turn pages into images. Text search and selection, links, forms, and other interactive features may be lost. Always keep the original digitally signed document, as any modification may invalidate its signature.
